How to Fold a Leotard (Step-by-Step with pictures!)

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Folding leotards properly can help maintain their shape and prevent unnecessary wrinkles. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to fold leotards:

1. Lay the leotard flat: Start by laying the leotard flat on a clean, dry surface. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases to ensure the fabric is flat and even. It's up to you whether you want to put it on its back or front. I laid mine flat on its back so that when I fold it, the rhinestones will be protected from scratching anything in my bag but also possibly falling off from other things in my gym bag.

2. Fold in half lengthwise: Fold the leotard in half lengthwise, bringing the right side over to meet the left side. The front and back of the leotard should now be aligned.

3. Fold the sleeves inward: Next, fold the sleeves inward toward the center of the leotard. You can either cross one sleeve over the other or tuck them behind the leotard.

4. Fold the bottom up and/or roll: You can either fold the bottom of the leotard up, aligning it with the top edge. The leotard should now be folded into a rectangular shape and roll from there. Or, what I did, was roll it entirely from top to the bottom.

*Depending on your storage preference, you can either roll the leotard into a tight roll or tuck it into a small compartment of your gym bag. Rolling can help prevent wrinkles, while tucking is a space-saving option.

Tips for Folding Leotards:

  • Always make sure the leotard is clean and dry before folding to avoid trapping any moisture or odors.

  • Avoid overstuffing your gym bag to prevent unnecessary pressure on the folded leotard.

  • If you have multiple leotards, consider using a separate compartment or a small zippered pouch to keep them organized in your gym bag.

  • For competitions or special events, consider using tissue paper or a garment bag to protect the leotard from other items in your bag.

By following these steps and tips, you can keep your leotards organized and in good condition, ready for your next gymnastics practice or competition.
