Do female gymnasts wear bras?

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

When watching female gymnasts perform their gravity-defying routines, one may wonder about the attire they wear underneath those sleek leotards. The question often arises: Do female gymnasts wear bras?

*A clip from the classic movie: "Stick It"

Answer: It depends on the gymnast!

Those who don't:

Many gymnasts prefer not to wear traditional bras under their leotards because they can create unwanted lines or discomfort. Instead, they rely on the secure fit of the leotard to ensure everything stays in place throughout their performance. The materials used in the construction of leos are designed to compress and hold the body firmly, offering adequate support and making bras unnecessary. Sometimes, even the pattern of the leotard helps cover the chest area well enough where a bra is not needed.

Those who do:

However, this is not enough for majority of gymnasts. Wearing a bra offers extra support and a peace of mind which is a plus since gymnasts already have more than enough to think about while tumbling, running, jumping, leaping, etc.

Most gymnasts opt for a nude sports bra. Many of the leotard companies sell their own briefs and bras with varying colors to match the gymnasts' skin tone. These sports bras are often seamless and made from moisture-wicking fabrics to minimize discomfort and maintain a smooth appearance.

Sports bras or not, the primary goal is to maintain a streamlined silhouette and to ensure that the undergarments do not interfere with the gymnasts' movements or the fit of the leotard.

Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!)

Can your bra show in gymnastics?

No. Not in meets/competitions. You will get a deduction.

But to be clear: the deduction is for INTENTIONALLY showing your bra or underwear.

In a 2019 USA judging panels sheet, it writes: "underwear (including sports bras) should not be visible".

If the underwear/bra is visible due to the cut of the leotard (whether intentional or not): the judge will give the gymnast's coach a warning. If the gymnast does not correct it after being notified, the judge will take off points in her next event.

If the underwear/bra is visible during activity of a routine: the judge will not deduct points

Are there any built-in bra leotards?

As of now, built-in bra leotards aren't widely used (or made). It is difficult to design a tight-fitting garment with extra padding and support without using wires or compromising the look of a sleek silhouette. It's difficult since the chest is a smoother and rounder part of the body; thus any bumps or creases is easily seen.

Why do leotards have to be so tight making it hard to wear underwear/bra under?

Well, this is more a question about why are leotards tight to begin with? Read "The History of Leotards in Gymanstics" article to learn more about why leos are designed this way.

But to answer shortly: just as swimmers wear a silicone, latex, or lycra caps to reduce their drag in the water, gymnasts wear lycra, Spandex material leotards to reduce drag in the air. The aerodynamics of an object moving in the air with less drag aids the object with the movement. Freedom in movement, no interference while flipping, a history of showing the physique of an athletic human body perform stunts are all reasons to why leotards are so tight.
